Maduro's wife seeks house arrest
Cilia Flores, the wife of Venezuela's ousted leader Nicolás Maduro, has requested—citing health reasons—to be released from custody in New York and placed under house arrest instead.
The couple was captured by US forces early this year during a high-profile operation in Venezuela. Both were brought to the US and remain in custody, facing charges of drug trafficking.
The defense now claims that 69-year-old Flores suffers from serious heart problems requiring a coronary angiogram and potentially surgery. Her lawyers argue that conditions in the detention facility do not allow for adequate medical care and that she should therefore be placed under house arrest, subject to an ankle monitor, round-the-clock surveillance, and the surrender of her passport.
The former presidential couple denies the charges against them, and Maduro has claimed in court that he is a "prisoner of war" held by the US.
