New sentences for Hong Kong activists

Three of Hong Kong’s most prominent human rights activists have been handed new prison sentences. The three were convicted of "security offenses" after calling on China to abolish the "one-party dictatorship."
The three activists—Albert Ho, Lee Cheuk-Yan, and Chow Hang-Tung—had all previously been convicted for participating in or organizing pro-democracy protests.
All three have also been in custody since 2021 awaiting Friday’s verdict; this time served will be deducted from their sentences, which range from five years to seven years and three months.
The UN, the EU, and several individual nations have condemned the sentences, which were handed down under the city's draconian security laws—measures Beijing pushed through in 2020 to quell the protests.
