The Finnish government proposes granting the Border Guard expanded powers to prevent damage to undersea cables.

Under the proposal, the Border Guard would be authorized to halt or interrupt acts of sabotage against critical undersea infrastructure.

Among other things, this would give the agency greater authority to intervene against unmanned vehicles, such as drones.

"One of the goals of the government program is to develop the Border Guard’s powers so that they align with the current global situation and security policy environment," the Ministry of the Interior writes in a press release.

In accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Border Guard would also gain the right to stop and inspect vessels within Finland’s exclusive economic zone if a vessel is suspected of lacking nationality.
