Xi: Safeguard peace

The BRICS nations should oppose "violations of other countries' sovereignty" and safeguard peace.

This was stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a summit with leaders from the BRICS nations.

Xi also stated that war in the Middle East does not serve "common interests" and urged the BRICS nations to "reject all forms of protectionism," reports the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

In a joint statement, the leaders called for calm in the Middle East:

"We express deep concern regarding the continued escalation in the Middle East/West Asia and, referring to our respective national positions, call for the utmost restraint and for avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation," the statement read.

The statement also condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and nuclear energy facilities, without singling out any specific party's attacks.

Xi Jinping is attending the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, alongside leaders from the eleven BRICS nations. Russian President Vladimir Putin is among those participating in the meeting.
