Cyberattacks reported against Russian election system
Russian authorities have announced that the country's electronic election system has been subjected to cyberattacks.
The attack specifically targeted the election system in Moscow during the ongoing parliamentary election. The election is considered neither free nor fair, as genuine opposition parties have been banned from participating.
The attack was "powerful" and took place overnight into Saturday, according to Ella Pamfilova, chair of Russia's election commission. She did not provide details on how the attack was carried out or who is suspected of being behind it.
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of attempting to "hinder" the election from taking place. Kyiv has not responded to the accusations.
Only parties that support Putin and do not question the full-scale invasion of Ukraine are permitted to participate in the election.
