Army chief wants combat-ready soldiers in Greenland

Denmark’s Army Chief, Peter Boysen, wants to see permanently stationed, combat-ready soldiers in Greenland. He stated this to TV2.

"It is highly relevant that we continue to be present up there," Boysen says, while emphasizing that the final decision rests with the politicians.

The announcement comes as NATO’s top military leadership gathered for a meeting in Copenhagen on Friday. The defense of Greenland and the Arctic is among the items on the agenda.

The statement should also be viewed in light of the US threat earlier this year to acquire Greenland by military means. At that time, Danish soldiers were temporarily deployed to the island.

Denmark confirms agreement with the US regarding Greenland's security

Denmark confirms that an agreement with the US regarding Greenland's security is in the works. The Prime Minister's Office announced this in a press release, according to Danish TV2. The agreement is set to be signed next week.

According to Donald Trump, the agreement gives the US control over security "and all other needs" in Greenland, he writes on Truth Social. He states that the agreement entails no cost to the US and has no end date.

"We are immediately beginning the process of developing a major military presence in a suitable part of Greenland," Trump writes.

A group of US soldiers has spent the week painting markings on the runway at Narsarsuaq Airport in southern Greenland, according to DR. The US military confirms to the channel that military personnel are conducting "technical assessments" at the airport to evaluate future operations.

Denmark and Greenland confirm agreement with the US: "To the benefit of us all"

Both Denmark and Greenland confirm that an agreement has been reached with the US regarding security in Greenland.

"The agreement recognizes Greenland's interests and our place in international cooperation. It is to the benefit of us all," writes Greenland's government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen in a statement, according to Danish TV2.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is also pleased with the agreement, which she says strengthens security in the Arctic and thereby benefits NATO and Europe.

"At the same time, the agreement recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination," she writes.
