The Houthi movement has taken control of the historic city of Mocka, AFP and Reuters report. It is said to be a step on the way to control the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait.

Reuters' information comes from sources within Yemen's internationally recognized government, which has long been fighting the Houthis. A military source confirmed the matter to AFP.

- If they take Mocka, they control almost the entire Red Sea coast of Yemen. This means that it will be easier to control Bab al-Mandab, security analyst Wolfgang Pusztai tells Al Jazeera.

Bab al-Mandab, also known as the "Gate to the Red Sea", has become increasingly important since traffic in the Strait of Hormuz was blocked due to the Iran war.
