Sources: Russian sabotage exercise stopped at Svalbard
Russian deep-sea submarines practiced deploying a new weapon against undersea cables this spring near Svalbard.
The secret Russian operation was thwarted, according to sources, by NATO allies.
Russia used deep-sea mini-submarines to simulate the deployment of a secret weapon intended to neutralize important undersea cables without leaving a trace, two officials with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
The Russian ships were confronted in a coordinated operation with Norway, Britain and the United States. The exercise was stopped and the Russian ships eventually left the area.
This spring, Britain and Norway announced that they had thwarted a secret Russian operation suspected of “hostile activity.” At that time, it was not clear that a new weapon had been discovered in connection with the confrontation, the location of the operation, or that the United States was involved.
