Thailand presses Israel on “disrespectful tourists”
Thailand is urging Israel to ensure that its tourists respect local laws and customs when they are in Thailand.
A series of incidents involving Israeli visitors has led to tensions in some of Thailand’s most popular destinations, where tourists have come into conflict with locals.
On Tuesday, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm held a “candid discussion” on the subject.
“Tourism is important to us, but it’s not just about income, it’s also about Thailand’s dignity,” Sihasak said after the meeting.
He stressed that visitors should “respect Thai traditions, culture and local ways of life.”
Fisher-Kamm, according to Sihasak, promised to intensify efforts to inform Israeli tourists about appropriate behavior in Thailand.
