Egypt is set to provide military support to Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces attacks from the Yemeni Houthi movement. The Egyptian parliament has approved a request to this effect from the president.
Parliament has given the green light to "take the necessary measures to support" Saudi Arabia, reports the state-owned newspaper al-Ahram.
Last week, President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi clarified that the measures in question are defensive in nature, rather than involving Egyptian offensive operations in Yemen.
The Houthi movement has escalated its war against Saudi Arabia. The Iranian-backed group has also throttled traffic in the Red Sea by establishing control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait—a development that negatively impacts Egypt’s vital customs revenue from the Suez Canal to the north.
In mid-September, al-Sisi hosted Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman in Cairo. The two leaders pledged "robust responses" to attacks and committed to keeping the Red Sea open to maritime traffic.
