Protest marches are winding their way through cities across France.

70,000 police officers have been deployed, equipped with tear gas and water cannons.

So far, 135 people have been arrested.

135 individuals have been arrested during today’s protests in France, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, as reported by France 24.

Earlier, the Interior Minister announced that 70,000 police officers had been mobilized for Saturday’s demonstrations.

Demonstrations banned

Organized protest marches began in several cities around 3:00 PM. In Paris, various trade unions have brought together thousands of participants, reports The Guardian.

In Bordeaux, demonstrations in the city center have been prohibited; an appeal against the ban was rejected by the administrative court, which deemed the restriction necessary due to the risks involved, reports Le Monde.

Charged with attempted murder of police officers

In Nantes and Lyon, police have used tear gas and water cannons to stop demonstrators who breached security cordons.

On Friday, a 34-year-old man was charged with the attempted murder of police officers and property damage after throwing a burning trash bin into the town hall in Limoges. Police officers were attacked by a crowd while attempting to protect the building from the fire—a blaze that caused the 43-meter-tall clock tower to collapse, reports Le Monde.

“Macron must resign”

The demonstrations began on September 17 in Créteil, driven by issues such as overcrowded classrooms, a lack of resources and staff, and dilapidated buildings. Since then, they have also come to encompass the rising cost of living.

Trade union activist Antoine tells *Le Monde* that the demonstrations in Paris aim to ensure that “Macron resigns, the social demands of high school students are heard, and wages are increased.”

Protests are also taking place in Italy this Saturday, with 500 military personnel deployed on the streets. According to Sky News, protests are likewise occurring in Albania, Spain, Portugal, and Montenegro, focusing on issues including housing costs, pension systems, and education.
