Canada-US Relations
Sources: US and Canada working on agreement regarding tariffs

The US and Canada are working on an agreement to ease American tariffs on Canadian steel and vehicles, according to several sources from both countries who spoke to Reuters.

A Canadian source indicated that an agreement could be finalized before the US midterm elections on November 3. However, American sources suggest that the Trump administration is seeking further concessions from the Canadian side.

On Friday, Trump agreed to lift a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian agricultural and forestry products.

Middle East Crisis  West Bank
UN: Israeli operation in Hebron could amount to ethnic cleansing

Israel’s military operation in the city of Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, “raises serious concerns” regarding ethnic cleansing, according to the UN, as reported by AFP.

On Friday, two Palestinians killed two Israeli soldiers near Hebron, prompting Israel to launch the operation. According to the municipality, more than 3,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes. Images show bulldozers razing houses to the ground.

“Statements by high-ranking Israeli officials indicate that the measures taken are punitive in nature and designed to instill fear,” says UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk.

Brazil’s Presidential Election
Flávio Bolsonaro: Federal Police Requested My Passport

Presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro says that Brazil’s Federal Police have asked him to surrender his passport following a visit to his imprisoned father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. This is reported by Reuters.

Flávio Bolsonaro states that he intends to comply with the request and that he has no plans to flee the country following yesterday’s election.

He claims that he has been prohibited from leaving the country, describing the move as a “clear attempt to intimidate him.” Without providing evidence, he asserts that the decision originated from a justice of Brazil’s Supreme Court.

On Monday evening, Bolsonaro announced that he would lead the opposition, having refused to acknowledge the election results for nearly 24 hours.

Trump on Bolsonaro’s Loss: “Looked Like a Rigged Election”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has labeled yesterday’s election in Brazil “so corrupt,” though he offered no evidence to support the claim, AFP reports.

“It looked like another rigged election,” he told reporters.

In the election, incumbent President Lula da Silva defeated the right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro has also refused to accept the election results and says he intends to challenge a Supreme Court decision to extend voting hours by two hours, a measure taken following issues with public transportation.
