More than 500 people have been injured in Taiwan as Typhoon Champi swept through the region.

Although the eye of the storm did not pass directly over Taiwan, Champi has nonetheless had a severe impact on many residents.

280,000 households lost power, and one person died after being swept away by waves whipped up by the storm’s winds. Thousands have been evacuated, and trees and power lines have been brought down.

The typhoon is expected to weaken as it moves toward Japan and China. In Shanghai, tens of thousands have been evacuated, and some train services have been suspended in anticipation of Champi’s arrival.

Dozens of flights have been canceled across the region, including in Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture.
