Trump: Denmark gave us Greenland
The US “got” Greenland from Denmark. That is the claim made by US President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Georgia, reports the Danish newspaper BT.
“Denmark was absolutely fantastic, by the way. They gave us Greenland. You know that, right? It’s just that you don’t read about it,” Trump said late Saturday night (early Sunday morning, Swedish time).
Trump also reiterated his previous remark that the Greenland agreement will “go down in history as the greatest real estate deal ever” – perhaps second only to Venezuela, writes BT.
The security and defense agreement signed between Greenland, the US, and Denmark in New York on September 22 builds upon a defense agreement dating back to 1951.
Among other things, it grants the US the opportunity to establish two additional military bases on the island. The US already has a base at Pituffik, formerly known as Thule Air Base.
