At least 25 women and girls die every day in the world’s armed conflicts, according to a press release from UN Women, the UN agency for gender equality.

Last year, more than 37,000 civilians died in these conflicts. One in four were women and girls—double the number compared to 2021—according to a UN report on women, peace, and security, which was released on Monday.

“More women and girls are affected by war than at any other time in decades. Yet, military spending is rising while development aid is shrinking,” says Sima Bahous, Executive Director of the UN agency, as quoted in the press release.

Furthermore, women are almost entirely excluded from peace negotiations. According to the report, women made up only five percent of negotiators across 57 peace processes worldwide—a decrease of two percentage points compared to the previous year.
