Pope has pneumonia - cancels speech in Rome  

 

The Pope says he has suffered from pneumonia and his traditional sermon at St Peter's Square in Rome was read instead by a staff member today. Several media reports. The Pope himself appeared via video link.  

 

During Saturday, the Pope is said to have been examined with a magnetic camera in hospital. According to the Vatican, more serious illness could be ruled out.  

 

The Pope has previously announced that he plans to visit the UN climate summit in Dubai from Friday next week. The Vatican has not announced whether his illness will affect the plans.

Concerns ahead of COP28: "Plans for net zero are under attack"  

 

"Plans to reach net zero are under attack." This is what former British Prime Minister Theresa May tells Politico ahead of the COP28 climate summit, which begins in Dubai next week. 

 

May herself helped introduce the UK's zero emissions target. According to Politico, the green transition is threatened by a wave of "populist backlash" sweeping across Europe.  

 

"And that wave risks becoming an American tsunami if Trump wins the election," writes the newspaper.
