The United Arab Emirates has planned to use its role as host of the COP28 climate summit to lobby for oil deals, according to documents seen by the BBC. According to the documents, the country aims to discuss business with 15 countries. Mozambique, Canada, Australia and Colombia are countries that see potential.
The UAE does not deny that it will use COP28 to hold business talks. In a statement from the country's group responsible for the meeting, they say that "private meetings are private".
The UN tells the BBC that the climate summit must not be used to promote vested interests.
Sultan Al Jaber, who chairs the climate meeting, is also the head of the United Arab Emirates' state oil company Adnoc.

Dubai negotiator: Unexpected leader can achieve best results
The EU's chief negotiator Jacob Werksman believes that the climate summit in Dubai will be challenged. He says so in an interview with Ekot. On the agenda is an agreement to phase out all fossil fuels - while several large economies are still heavily dependent on them.
At the same time, Werksman wants to reverse the reasoning that the chairmanship of the negotiations is held by the head of the United Arab Emirates state oil company Adnoc, Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber. Something that met with repeated criticism.
- It has often been shown that the most unexpected leader can achieve the best results, says the negotiator to the radio.

Source: Biden is not traveling to the COP28
climate summit
US President Joe Biden will not attend the UN climate conference COP28 that starts in Dubai on Thursday, a White House source told the New York Times.
Other sources within the administration believe that it is the war between Israel and Hamas that prompted the president to make his decision. In an interview last week, US climate envoy John Kerry was asked a question about Biden's plans for COP28 and then gave a response along the same lines.
- They have the war in the Middle East and a war in Ukraine, a lot of things going on, Kerry said.
According to Biden's schedule, he will instead meet the Angolan president and carry out a ceremonial Christmas tree lighting.
The Pope, King Charles III and leaders from nearly 200 countries will attend the meeting.
