Saudiarabien vill att fattiga länder blir oljeberoende
Saudi Arabia wants poor countries to become dependent on oil
Saudi Arabia has an extensive investment plan aimed at creating a demand for gas and oil in developing countries, writes The Guardian. Critics say the plan is designed to make countries "dependent on" Saudi Arabia's products.
In official information, the Saudi program is presented as an attempt to "tear down barriers" linked to energy and transport and to "increase sustainability". But according to sources at the Center for Climate Reporting and Channel 4, "one of the main goals" is to increase the use of gas and oil.
Saudi Arabia's plan includes a proposal to accelerate the development of supersonic aircraft. It is noted that the technology requires more than three times as much fuel as a conventional aircraft.
A big question at the COP28 meeting, which opens in Dubai on Thursday, is how the world's countries can agree on promises to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

COP28 host violates own gas ban: "Worrying"
In the Gulf state of the United Arab Emirates, which is hosting the climate conference COP28, the technology of gas flaring is used despite having been banned for 20 years. The BBC writes that the flaring leads to the release of gas spreading hundreds of kilometers in the region, which brings with it health risks.
Gas flaring is a technique that involves burning excess gas in connection with oil extraction.
David Boyd, the UN's special rapporteur on human rights and the environment, calls the BBC's disclosure "very worrying".
- Despite the massive human suffering, "Big Oil" and oil states continue as if nothing has happened with total impunity and zero accountability, he says.
Iraq, Iran and Kuwait also burn excess gas, according to the BBC. None of the countries have commented on the data.
