Sweden signs defense agreement with the US
On Tuesday, Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) will meet his American counterpart Lloyd Austin to sign a military cooperation agreement between Sweden and the United States. This was stated by sources within the Pentagon and the Armed Forces for Ekot and SVT Nyheter. The armed forces have later confirmed the information.
Negotiations on the cooperation agreement have been ongoing since January. The agreement means that US forces will have greater opportunity to operate on Swedish military bases, and that defense equipment from the US will be able to be stored in Sweden.

Legal concerns over agreements with the US on defense
The agreement that gives the US military the right to use parts of certain Swedish bases has broad support in the Riksdag, writes TT.
- It is needed and deepens Sweden's relationship with the USA and it creates increased stability in our relationship, says the former Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist (S).
However, the Left Party's foreign policy spokesperson Håkan Svenneling is critical of the fact that the agreement means that American soldiers could not be prosecuted by a Swedish court in the event of certain crimes on Swedish soil.
The content of the agreement is only made public after the signing, but Norway entered into a similar agreement in 2022. The country then surrendered its first right to prosecute American soldiers if someone outside the service committed a crime on Norwegian soil.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) signs the agreement in Washington DC today.
