1866 law behind Trump decision: "Tyranny"
The decision to dislodge Donald Trump from the Republican primary in Colorado is based on an 1866 law that prohibits rioters from taking seats in Congress. Trump himself describes the decision as "tyrannical", reports TT.
"Dishonorable Joe (Biden, editor's note) and the Democrats know they can't beat us in the election, their new plan is to invalidate every single Trump ballot in the country," writes the ex-president in a fundraising email addressed to his supporters.
According to the ruling, Trump's name may not appear on the ballots in the state's primary election, which will be decided on the so-called Super Tuesday, March 5. The reason is his involvement in the events surrounding the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Analysis: "Merry Christmas, HD - you had no plans, did you?"
"A historic verdict", "a massive stress test for US institutions", "The Grinch has ruined Christmas for the US Supreme Court".
The political writers are going into a spin after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled by a narrow majority that Donald Trump cannot be on the ballot in next year's primary election. The background to the decision is Trump's role in storming the Capitol in 2021.
The decision will almost certainly end up in the lap of the US Supreme Court, Politico's Adam Wren and Josh Gerstein write in an analysis. The ruling also further underscores the "exceptional mess" of a presidential election that plays out as much in the courtroom as on the campaign trail.
CNN's Marshall Cohen writes that the verdict in Colorado is an admission that Trump tried to upend the 2020 election results.
"But Trump has mastered the art of turning legal setbacks into public opinion successes," writes Cohen.
National Review's Dan McLaughlin writes in a commentary that the US Supreme Court will not be able to duck or delay the handling of the case. He sends his regards to Chief Justice John Roberts.
"Merry Christmas, hope you and your colleagues didn't have any plans."

Judges warn of "chaos" after Colorado decision
Three of seven Colorado Supreme Court justices opposed the decision to bar Donald Trump from appearing on the state's primary ballot. Several of them are now questioning the process surrounding the decision, writes Newsweek.
The verdict is based on Trump's role during the storming of the Capitol in 2021. But Chief Justice Brian Boatright says that the state's election law is not written to determine whether a candidate can be considered to have been a rioter or not. According to Boatright, the case should never have been brought up, reports CNN.
Another judge, Carlos Samour, warns of "chaos" in the United States after the decision and believes that the ex-president did not receive a fair trial.
Both believe that the law that was used was not intended to be used in the way that happened, as there is no judgment that establishes that Trump participated in a rebellion.
The majority of the court is made up of judges who have been appointed by the Democrats. In a statement they wrote that the decision was not taken lightly.
