Political situation in France
Marine Le Pen threatens to bring down France's government
The
French far-right politician Marine Le Pen increases the pressure on the
budget negotiations. That's what Bloomberg writes. She states that
National Assembly is ready to bring down Prime Minister Michel Barnier's
government if the 2025 budget is not changed.
Barnier, who leads
a minority government, is expected to try to go around parliament to
pass the budget, which in turn could lead to a vote of no confidence.
Even
if the government falls, new elections cannot be held until next summer
at the earliest, writes TT. Government officials have warned that
France risks ending up in an economic situation comparable to Greece
during the financial crisis 15 years ago, according to the news agency.
The elections in Uruguay
Left-wing candidate victorious in Uruguay: "It's getting brighter"
The
leftist alliance Frente Amplio's candidate Yamandú Orsi wins the
presidential election in Uruguay and takes over power in the country
after five years of conservative rule, writes Reuters.
- It's getting brighter on the horizon, Orsi tells his supporters in his victory speech.
Orsi's
election campaign was boosted by the support of popular ex-president
Jose "Pepe" Mujica. During his rule from 2010 to 2015, the ex-president
was referred to as "the world's poorest president" when, among other
things, he gave away the lion's share of his salary to charity and drove
around in an old Volkswagen.
Incumbent president Luis Lacalle
Pou has congratulated Orsi on the win in a phone call and announced that
he will be available for a smooth handover.
