Drought in Brazil brings highest coffee price in 47 years

Coffee prices have soared due to concerns about next year's harvest. Arabica bean futures prices in New York rose on Wednesday to just over $3.18 per pound, the highest since 1977. Bloomberg reports.

Since the turn of the year, the price has risen by nearly 70 percent.

The price increase follows a longer dry period in Brazil. Although it rained in October, there are fears that the development of the beans will be hampered.

Vietnam, the world's second largest exporter, has also been affected by both drought and subsequent heavy rains in connection with the harvest.

Crisis Northvolt
Analysis: China may make a sham bid for Northvolt

The struggling battery manufacturer Northvolt may end up in the hands of China, according to Per Lindvall at Fokus. He points out that the founder of Chinese battery giant CATL has already established ventures in Europe and criticized Northvolt's technology, production and design.

"Of course, it cannot be ruled out that Zeng wants to 'talk down the price' of Northvolt in order to make a sham bid and take over the factory," he writes.

The Financial Times' daily Lex column writes about the difference between the public and private markets' accounting standards, in light of the second largest owner Goldman Sachs writing down its holdings to zero from SEK 10 billion.

"An embarrassing moment for the masters of the private markets whose scale, influence and inherent opacity only continue to grow," writes Lex.

The oppression of minorities in China
After sharp criticism: VW leaves Xinjiang in China

German car giant Volkswagen will sell its share in the partially owned factory in China's Xinjiang, it announced on Wednesday. Investors have long directed sharp criticism at the vehicle manufacturer because it has not been possible to completely rule out human rights abuses at the factory, writes Bloomberg.

In an internal investigation published last year, Volkswagen found no signs of forced labor in the factory, but at the same time underlined that it was difficult to gather independent information in the country.

Both the share in the factory and a test track will be sold on to Chinese companies.

Beijing has long been accused of exploiting Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in forced labor in the province of Xinjiang.

Psychologist: More and more people are seeking treatment for shopping addiction

The number of people seeking treatment for shopping addiction has increased sharply in recent years. That's what psychologist Caroline Erkers tells Ekot.

- There are probably three times as many coming now as there were before, roughly in 2017-2018, says Erkers, who runs the company Svea KBT.

She links the increase to digitization and to the fact that there are now more apps that encourage purchases.

There are no public statistics in the area, but the Kronofogden also notices an increase. Last year, 37 percent of those who applied for debt relief indicated that overconsumption was the main reason for their indebtedness, compared with 17 percent in 2018.
