The election in the United States Trump's victory

Trump is proposed to treat the drug crisis as terror

Trump's transition team has been briefed on a plan with a series of measures aimed at combating the so-called fentanyl crisis, Reuters reports.

Among several proposals to combat the trade of the deadly synthetic opioid are sanctions against Chinese companies and individuals involved in the drug trade.

It also includes proposals to conduct cyber warfare against Mexican cartels and for the CIA to put as much effort into fentanyl as into terrorist groups. The plan was designed by a former top anti-money laundering official and is now circulating in Trump's circle.

The New York Times writes that the US and China have collaborated in recent years to stop Chinese manufacturers' exports of the drug.

World leaders hit back: "No winners in trade wars"

Officials from Mexico, Canada and China warn that Donald Trump's tariffs would hurt the economies of everyone involved. That's what Reuters writes after the president threatened the USA's three largest trading partners.

- One tariff leads to another and so on, in the end the economies of both countries will be at stake, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at a press conference on Tuesday.

A spokesperson from the Chinese embassy in Washington says that "no one wins in a trade war", according to Reuters. The Bank of Canada warned that any action by Trump would have "consequences on both sides of the border".

Trump is considering AI czar - but it won't be Musk

Donald Trump is considering appointing an "AI czar" to the White House, reports Axios. The mission will be to coordinate federal policy and state use of emerging AI technology, the site states.

It is not Elon Musk who is intended for the role, but he is expected to be involved in the issues.

In American politics, the word czar is used as an informal title for a person who has been appointed by the government, usually by the president, to lead and coordinate efforts in a specific policy area or to deal with a particular crisis.

"Trump stirs the pot - but surprisingly early"

Import tariffs against Mexico and Canada would hit the economies of US neighbors hard. According to Reuters, over 83 percent of Mexican exports and 75 percent of Canadian exports went to the United States last year.

William Reinsch, former head of the US trade organization NFTC, states that it could be a way for Trump to negotiate the trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico that he himself signed in 2020.

- This resembles a threat more than anything else. I guess the idea is that if you keep beating them down, eventually Canada and Mexico will give up.

The tariffs can also hit the US economy hard, writes Bloomberg. Among other things, the automotive and energy sectors are closely linked with both Mexico and Canada.

Flavio Volpe, head of the Canadian trade group Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, says that tariffs of 25 percent against Canada are not feasible in principle because the margins in the automotive sector are too low.

- Trump has done what he is known for: tried to stir the pot. The only surprising thing is how early he did it, says Volpe to the news agency.
