UN day against violence against women

140 women are murdered every day by a relative

An average of 140 women and girls were killed every day by their partner or a family member in 2023 globally. This is according to a new report from UN Women.

A total of 85,000 women were murdered by men last year. In 60 percent of the cases, the man was a relative of the woman.

The report emphasizes that the home is the most dangerous place for women. Overall, 80 percent of the world's homicide victims are men, but women and girls are disproportionately affected by lethal domestic violence.

The figures in the report are higher than in previous years, which is seen as a result of better data rather than more murders.

Women who protested the violence were arrested in Turkey

Turkish police have arrested tens of people who participated in a demonstration against the widespread violence against women, AP reports.

The arrests came after the protesters defied a ban on protests in Istanbul and tried to enter the main pedestrian street of Istiklal and Taksim Square.

The criticism is primarily about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to withdraw the country from the so-called Istanbul Convention, which was signed in 2011 with the aim of preventing and combating violence against women. According to the local organization We Will Stop Femicide, over 400 women have been murdered in Turkey so far in 2024.
