The Russian invasion

The battles
USA: Ukraine needs more soldiers - bring in 18-year-olds

The US Biden administration is urging Ukraine to lower the age for mobilization from 25 to 18, an official told Reuters. He believes that the Ukrainians are not mobilizing enough soldiers to compensate for the losses on the battlefield.

- The Russians are making progress in the east and are starting to push back the Ukrainian troops in Kursk. Mobilization and more soldiers could make a decisive difference, says the official.

In April, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a new law that lowered the mobilization age from 27 to 25, increasing the chances of enlisting more civilians in the defense.

Vladimir Putin threatens Kyiv with the new Oreshnik robot

Russian President Vladimir Putin threatens to deploy the new Oreshnik robot against "Kyiv's decision-making center", several media reports.

The statement comes after widespread Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. According to Putin, the night's attack was a response to Ukraine being allowed to use Western weapons deep into Russia.

Putin also claims that there is no parallel in the West to the power of the Oreshnik, and says that large-scale use would be comparable to nuclear weapons.

Reuters writes in an in-depth review of Oreshnik that the costly robot's purpose may be more psychological than military. Putin appears to want to signal to the West that Russia has advanced weapons systems and is ready to escalate the conflict if necessary, according to the news agency.

Roman was without power: "Every winter gets tougher"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is appealing to the country's allies to send more air defenses after last night's widespread Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid, AP reports.

Residents who spoke to CNN testified that air raid alarms sounded early Friday morning and that the attacks left them without power for hours.

- We all understand that every winter gets tougher, says Roman Turij, a resident of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine.

Several Ukrainian cities were attacked with around 200 robots and drones.

Russian reactions
Putin: The ruble collapse is no reason to panic

In the past week, the Russian ruble has retreated to its lowest level against the dollar since Russia invaded Ukraine, several media reports.

- The situation is under control. There is absolutely no reason to panic, President Vladimir Putin told reporters in Astana, Kazakhstan's capital.

He believes that the weakening is connected to seasonal causes. On Wednesday, the country's central bank was forced to step in to strengthen the currency, writes CNBC.
