Major offensive against the regime in Syria – 200 dead
Rebel groups are carrying out a large-scale offensive against the forces of the Syrian regime in the northwestern parts of the country, AFP reports.
The offensive is being led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, around 200 people, mostly combatants, have died. The Syrian regime has responded with airstrikes.
The jihadists, who are fighting alongside allied groups, say they have cut off a key road that runs between Aleppo and the capital, Damascus.
The offensive began on Wednesday and is the largest in the war-torn country in years, writes The Guardian. Already earlier this week, the groups reached the outskirts of Aleppo.
- Which is of gigantic importance, says counter-terrorism expert Charles Lister to the New York Times.
