Norwegian glaciers have been melting at a record speed
Norwegian glaciers have melted a record amount in the summer of 2024, reports NRK. Of 35 glaciers, all but one have shrunk.
Perhaps the most famous glacier, Nigardsbreen, has retreated over 400 meters in the last ten years, and this summer it retreated another 42 meters.
Glacier researcher Liss Marie Andreassen says it was "a bit shocking" to see so much melting in one year.
- The glaciers are melting due to climate change. They are very sensitive to climate change and adapt their size by increasing or decreasing when the climate changes, says Andreassen.
Abandoned "city under the ice" rediscovered in Greenland
Nasa scientists have rediscovered Camp Century, a former secret US Cold War base buried under 30 meters of ice in northwest Greenland. This is reported by Sky News.
Camp Century was built in 1959 with the purpose of launching ballistic missiles against the then Soviet Union. But the base was abandoned and nature had to take over.
When scientists flew over Greenland in April this year and mapped the ice sheet using radar technology, the base suddenly appeared. Several media are now publishing the images from the military base buried under ice.
- In the new data, individual structures in the secret city can be seen more clearly than ever before, says cryosphere researcher Chad Greene according to USA Today.
