Trump's USA Midterm elections in the USA

Republican warning: We could lose Florida

The Republicans' strong support among blacks and Latinos in Florida may be slipping out of their hands, writes Reuters.

The sluggish economy, the high cost of living and the White House's aggressive immigration policy are all factors that have made Florida Democrats begin to hope for change after years of Republican successes.

María Salazar, a Republican representative from Florida, tells the news agency that the immigration police arrests could cost the Republicans both their strong support in Florida and their majority in Congress.

- That is a very big mistake.

Martha Arias, who runs a law firm focused on immigration issues in Miami, says there are two things she hears from almost every client who visits her after a family member is arrested by immigration police. "I never thought this would happen to me" and "I regret my vote."

Trump backs Republican in California – to Republicans' chagrin

Donald Trump has decided to support Republican Steve Hilton in the race to become California's next governor, but many local Republicans think he should have stayed out of the running. This is reported by Politico.

According to the newspaper, many Republicans believe that the party really only has one chance to win: if the Democrats field so many candidates that the Republicans, who have only two, take both seats in the first round.

Democrats are also divided on the question of who they want to replace current governor Gavin Newsom. A recent opinion poll from Berkeley University gave the two Republicans the lead over no fewer than eight Democratic candidates – while the Democrats are collecting 60 percent of the vote overall to the Republicans' 33.

If a Democrat advances to the second round, it is therefore considered almost impossible for a Republican to win.

However, for both Republicans to advance requires a fairly even distribution of votes between the two Republican candidates, something that Trump may now have sabotaged, writes the LA Times.
