Frederiksen on the talks: Everyone can see that it is difficult

Today, Denmark's Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen resumes talks with other parties about forming a new government.

"I think everyone can see that it is difficult this time," writes Frederiksen, who has almost had the responsibility of probing for two weeks, on Facebook.

She lists issues where there is a broad majority: more money for schools, a strict immigration policy, military buildup and measures to curb the energy crisis. But on many issues there is still great disagreement.

Frederiksen urges the parties to enter the talks pragmatically with the goal of meeting.

"From the Social Democrats' side, we will do what we can," she writes.

Acute eye disease forces top Danish politician to take a break

The leader of the Danish right-wing party Venstre, Troels Lund Poulsen, suffered an eye disease on Saturday and was forced to undergo emergency surgery, he announced on Facebook.

“I feel fine under the circumstances. But the operation means that I have to take it easy for the next seven to ten days.”

Troels Lund Poulsen, who is Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister, will therefore miss important days in the search for a new government. This week, Mette Frederiksen will continue her attempt to form a government.

The election in Denmark — it’s all about the matter

• In the Danish election on March 24, the Left Bloc won 84 seats, the Right Bloc 77 and the Moderates 14 seats. The right-wing has since suffered several defections.
• No bloc won a majority of its own, which gives the Moderates’ Lars Løkke Rasmussen a wave-making role in government formation.
• The Social Democrats and the Liberal Party made their worst choices ever. Parliament is very fragmented with many small or medium-sized parties.
• The government negotiations have been difficult and an increasing number of Danes have expressed support for a centrist government across bloc boundaries.R
