Political situation in Germany

Support for the German government continues to decline

The German social democratic SPD only has 13 percent in a new opinion poll conducted by Insa for the newspaper Bild. This is the lowest figure in two years.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's party CDU/CSU loses one percentage point compared to the previous survey and thus slips to second place on the list of parties with the highest support. The far-right AfD has 26 percent, the highest of all.

Bild notes that this is bad news for the government, which consists of the Christian Democratic CDU and SPD. According to the survey, they have a combined 38 percent of the seats, and thus do not reach a majority.

Today, the black-red coalition CDU/SPD has a majority in the Bundestag.

AFD reportedly distances itself from Trump over the war

The German far-right AfD party is starting to distance itself from Donald Trump over the war in Iran, sources tell the Financial Times. The party has previously been very close to the American president and his allies in Maga circles.

Last week, the party leadership asked members to cut back on trips to the United States and Republican representatives, the newspaper writes.

Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, who have previously spoken warmly of the administration, have condemned the US attacks on Iran.

– The intervention in Iran and the recession it risks causing in Europe have become a turning point. Voices within the AFD that have always seen the US as a bad ally have now gained the upper hand, says Jacob Ross at the think tank DGAP.
