Criticism: "Dumb Idea" to Reopen Alcatraz
Donald Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay as a modern prison. However, the proposal is not viewed favorably by many in the city, writes the San Francisco Chronicle.
House of Representatives member Nancy Pelosi calls the proposal "a dumb idea."
- Alcatraz is a historical museum that belongs to the people and San Francisco residents will not let Washington turn one of our most iconic landmarks into a political prop.
The legendary prison closed more than 60 years ago and is today one of San Francisco's most important tourist attractions.
Donald Trump has been talking about reopening the prison, which today lies in ruins, since last year. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Trump, who likes classic films, may have gotten the idea after seeing "Escape from Alcatraz" with Clint Eastwood.
Trump Requests $1.4 Billion to Open Alcatraz
Donald Trump has requested $152 million, equivalent to just over $1.4 billion, to reopen Alcatraz prison. The New York Times reports.
The facility, located on an island off San Francisco, was closed more than 60 years ago. Today, the former prison is a popular tourist attraction, but lies partly in ruins and lacks running water and sewage, among other things.
When the prison was closed, the Federal Bureau of Prisons estimated that it would cost at least $3 million in repairs just to keep the prison open, according to CNN.

- I expect something in the coming weeks, and the president is considering both changes and reorganizations, the source says.
Furthermore, the source says that he does not know who is at risk of losing his job next.
According to another source close to Trump, the president wanted to avoid firing government leaders during the first year of his term. But that no longer seems to be the case.
- He no longer seems to care about what it looks like.
In less than a month, Trump has fired both Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
