Middle East Crisis Reactions

Iran: US demands are both ambitious and illogical

The ceasefire proposal put forward by Pakistan contains far-reaching US demands that are "both extremely ambitious, unusual and illogical", Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said, according to Al Jazeera.

According to sources, the proposal means that a 45-day ceasefire would come into effect immediately, but the demands for it have not been made public. Iran has previously said that it is not considering opening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for a temporary ceasefire.

The US has threatened to launch widespread attacks on roads and energy facilities if Iran does not open the strait by Tuesday.

- Even threatening to do so is undoubtedly a war crime, says Baghaei, who believes that Iran will not budge.

Negotiations on ceasefire tonight – but Iran refuses to open the Strait

Iran has received a proposal from Pakistan for an immediate ceasefire, but will not open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for a temporary ceasefire, senior Iranian sources told Reuters.

The US has not commented on the proposal. On Sunday, Donald Trump wrote on social media that Iran has until Tuesday to open the Strait of Hormuz, otherwise the US will “unleash all hell” on Iran.

Mediators from Pakistan are said to have been in contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi as well as US Vice President JD Vance and special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff throughout the night.

The proposal involves a ceasefire for 45 days and has been presented by mediators Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt. According to AFP, the mediators hope that the ceasefire can come into effect immediately and that a permanent end to the fighting can be negotiated during that time.
