IS leader killed by US in Syria

A senior IS leader was killed in a US airstrike in northwestern Syria last week, the US military said.

According to the US military command Centcom, the attack is part of the US's ongoing work to combat terrorists who pose a threat to the US or to Americans abroad.

The US began military operations in Syria more than a decade ago and assisted local Kurdish-dominated forces in the fight against IS.

Earlier this year, US and Syrian authorities announced that Syria had regained control of the large bases previously controlled by the terrorist group. However, US forces are still conducting regular operations against the dormant IS cells that remain in the country.
