Taliban on the way to Brussels – the meeting is criticised

Today a Taliban delegation is expected to fly into Brussels for talks with the EU Commission on the return of Afghan migrants, AFP reports. Belgium has issued five one-day visas to the delegation, which will travel in and out via Turkey.

According to the EU, the meeting is technical and does not imply any recognition of the Taliban's rule. At the same time, human rights organizations have criticized the meeting.

- EU countries are undermining their credibility by condemning the Taliban's abuses while at the same time cooperating with them to forcibly deport Afghans, Fereshta Abbasi at Human Rights Watch told the news agency.

Deportation centers outside the EU could open in 2027

EU-funded deportation centers could be established outside the union as early as next year. This is what Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Financial Times.

"The centers must comply with international law. I think everyone agrees on that. So they will be centers outside Europe, but on European terms," says Frederiksen, who has long been pushing the issue of so-called return centers.

Moving parts of migration management outside the EU has long been controversial, but is now receiving support from an increasing number of member states. At the same time, migration policies are being tightened around Europe, partly as a result of the increased influence of far-right parties.
