The US Senate has voted to block Donald Trump from resuming the war on Iran.

The proposal won by a vote of 50-48, with four Republicans voting with the Democrats.

The vote, which drives a wedge between the Republican members and the White House, comes shortly after the US and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war that the US and Israel launched against Iran on February 28.

The initiative, which was given the green light in the House of Representatives earlier in June, cannot be stopped, but Democrats and Republicans have different views on whether it is legally binding or of a more symbolic nature.
