Middle East Crisis Iran War

New night of attacks between the US and Iran – worst since the ceasefire

Iran and the US have carried out attacks that are described as the worst since the ceasefire came into effect in April, reports CNN.

The fighting is said to have begun after the US fired on an oil tanker heading towards the oil island of Kharg in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US military, Iran responded by sending drones into the airspace of Kuwait and Bahrain. The targets are said to have been US military bases.

In subsequent counterattacks, the US attacked military targets on the island of Qeshm, whereupon Iran's Revolutionary Guard is said to have fired on a ship with US connections.

The US states that all attacks have been stopped and that no one was injured.

While the countries continue to attack each other, Iranian media have signaled that peace talks between Washington and Tehran are continuing. The US president has repeated the message that a deal could be close and that an agreement could come in the near future.

One dead and 60 injured after attack on Kuwait

At least one person has been killed and another 63 people have been injured in an Iranian drone attack on the international airport in Kuwait, the country's military said on X. As a result of the attacks, air traffic has been halted indefinitely.

Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan, spokesman for Kuwait's Ministry of Defense, describes the attack as "a criminal Iranian aggression that resulted in significant material damage and personal injuries". The drones are said to have hit, among other things, the airport's terminals and buildings used in diplomatic contexts.

The US stated this morning that Iran had attacked both Kuwait and Bahrain. Iran, in turn, claims that it has responded to American attacks.

Peace Talks
Peace talks stalled – no signs of success

Peace talks between Iran and the US appear to be at a standstill – at least there are no signs that the war will end anytime soon, several US media outlets report.

At the end of last week, Iranian negotiators announced that they were ending all talks with the US with immediate effect. A few days later, on Tuesday, Donald Trump dismissed the reports as “fake” and said that talks with Iran had been held for the past four days. He also said that it was “not impossible” that an agreement could be reached to open the Strait of Hormuz in the coming week. The president has repeatedly made similar statements during the war that have not been fulfilled.

Iranian state media have also reported that talks with the US have resumed and that the US peace proposal is being evaluated.

But there is still great uncertainty about how far apart the countries stand and no new meetings are planned. A sticking point for Iran has previously been the American demand to dismantle its nuclear energy program and hand over all enriched uranium.
