A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 shook one of Japan's southernmost islands, Kyushu, on Tuesday morning, Swedish time. An aftershock struck half an hour later.
Several buildings collapsed, the power went out and at least 50 people were taken to hospital. It was later confirmed that several people had died.
According to the BBC, many people are trapped inside a shopping mall.

Many people are trapped in a collapsed shopping mall in Kumamoto, Japan after the powerful earthquake, writes the BBC.
Eyewitnesses told the Japanese news agency NHK that the second floor of the shopping mall collapsed, writes The Japan Times. Some kind of explosion is also said to have occurred.
Video clips show people fleeing the scene while clouds of smoke rise into the sky. Around 200 people are estimated to have made it out, but it is unclear how many are still inside the building.
