New rains expected: Government promises support for victims

New heavy rains are expected to hit Pakistan on Wednesday, writes Dawn. According to the country's weather agency, the capital Islamabad is at risk of flooding, among other things.

The government, which has been criticized for how it handles the recurring floods in the country, announced during a press conference on Tuesday morning that it was prepared for the worst.

- We will protect infrastructure and ensure that help arrives quickly to minimize the suffering of the public, says Information Minister Attaullah Tarar according to The Express Tribune.

Over 100 dead after month of monsoon rains in Pakistan

Monsoon rains and floods have claimed at least 109 lives in Pakistan in the past month, reports AP. Almost half of the deaths have occurred in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, often in connection with houses or roofs collapsing.

“This is only the middle of the monsoon season. It will probably continue like this until September,” Al Jazeera’s correspondent Kamal Hyder told his own channel.

Authorities have previously warned that they cannot rule out a situation similar to the devastating floods of 2002, when more than 1,700 people died and a third of the country was submerged.
