Happy faces after Netanyahu's meeting with Trump
The meeting between Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump in Washington DC went very well, according to the spokesmen for both leaders.
- It was one of the best conversations I have had with our friend President Trump, Netanyahu said in a videotaped speech.
The Israeli Prime Minister was seen leaving the White House on Tuesday after just over an hour inside the building.
Trump's press spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called the meeting "positive and productive" in a post on X, while Netanyahu's staff expressed themselves even more positively.
"It was an extremely positive meeting. The Prime Minister and the President had a fantastic and in-depth discussion on key issues, primarily Iran," the statement said, according to AFP.
Netanyahu himself says in a recorded speech that the two are united in their goal of ensuring that Iran can never develop nuclear weapons.
The meeting was not an official state visit – but it is the first time they have met since the start of the Iran war in February. The relationship between them has been strained recently and before the meeting there was speculation that they would not agree in the conversation.
Just hours before the meeting, Trump told Fox News that “I don’t need ‘Bibi’ (Netanyahu) to know things”, referring to intelligence information about Iran’s nuclear energy program and possible attacks against it.
Trump also claimed at the time that he had saved Israel.
– If I were not president today, Israel would not exist, he said according to The Times of Israel.
Netanyahu, in turn, has objected to the US’s expected sale of the F-35 fighter jet to Turkey.
The Israeli prime minister is in Washington DC mainly for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
