Teenager in Poland suspected of carrying out sabotage against Russia

An 18-year-old Ukrainian man in Poland is suspected of carrying out sabotage for the Russian intelligence service, with the aim of worsening relations between Poland and Ukraine. This is reported by the BBC.

He is charged with 47 counts, including vandalism of a monument commemorating tens of thousands of Polish victims of the Volhynia massacre carried out by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army during World War II.

He is also alleged to have recruited others for similar missions, and paid them with cryptocurrency registered in Russia and China.

According to the indictment, the man's motives were financial, not ideological. He now faces life in prison.

Ukraine's response
Head of the security service becomes new defense minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appoints the acting head of the country's security service, Yevheniy Chmara, as acting defense minister, reports Reuters.

The president is now asking parliament to approve Chmara.

“I have tasked Yevheniy Chmara with carrying out the ministerial work, continuing to reform the defense sector and confirming that Ukraine is achieving all the results we have talked about,” Zelensky wrote in a post on Telegram.

Zelensky has received sharp criticism from several quarters for his decision to fire former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov after only six months in office.

The fires in Canada
Over 800 forest fires are raging in Canada

Over 800 forest fires are raging in Canada. 23 of them are said to have flared up during the day, reports the BBC.

The smoke from the fires means significantly reduced air quality, not only in Canada, but also far down in the United States. In states such as Michigan and Minnesota, the air is classified as dangerous to breathe, and residents in the area are urged to stay indoors.

The majority of the fires are burning uncontrolled. Thunderstorms and rain are expected in the coming days, but it is unlikely that precipitation will be needed to make any difference.

Catastrophic flooding in Texas: “Large and deadly”

Several days of intense rain have led to catastrophic flooding in the US state of Texas, AP reports.

At least one person has died so far, according to the state’s governor.

The San Antonio Weather Service is warning that a “large and deadly” flood is rushing down the Guadalupe River, which has risen ten meters higher than usual. Last year, the river overflowed so badly that 28 leaders and participants at the Camp Mystic summer camp died.

Residents in the area are urged to immediately seek higher ground.

Dozens of people have so far had to be rescued from the floods.
