Firefighters in both France and Spain are doing everything in their power to get the forest fires under control.
Many are toiling away during long shifts and risking their lives on the job. In France alone, 93 firefighters have been injured.
“It doesn’t matter what you do, it can’t be put out”
The
record-breaking fires in Spain are unprecedented. That’s what
firefighter Javier García told the AP from the extensive fire in Ávila
west of Madrid.
– Now it’s first about saving lives, then homes and then the forest, he says.
So
far this year, the fires have destroyed about 1,530 square kilometers
in Spain – six times more than during the same period in 2025. The fire
in Ávila is also the largest in the country’s history and has devoured
about 500 square kilometers, an area five times larger than Barcelona.

Raúl Guerrero also describes the situation as unique. He and his force
of 40 people have been forced to evacuate several times.
– The fire is so intense and powerful that it doesn’t matter what you do, it can’t be put out, he says.
