A militant Islamist group in Nigeria has attacked participants who had gathered for Friday prayers. A large number of people were abducted and several were killed, according to a member of parliament and witnesses.

The attack took place in Niger state and was aimed at the town of Dikera, said federal representative Jafaru Mohammed. According to reports, the militant group, which operates mainly in the northeast of Nigeria and is believed to have links to the ISSP terrorist movement, attacked after Friday prayers had ended.

– Hundreds of followers of the armed group Lakuwara attacked us with firearms, knives and swords, says Jibril Ahmad, who survived the attack.

– They slaughtered our people, they said we did not adhere to the right religion.

State police say they are aware of the incident, but that they have no death toll.
