Myanmar’s air force attacked a Buddhist monastery in the Sagaing region on Friday in the ongoing and extensive internal fighting in the country.

At least 14 people were killed in the attack.

The airstrike was carried out on Friday morning against the town of Swel le Oh, about seventy kilometers west of Myanmar’s second largest city, Mandalay. The information comes from a spokesman for an opposition local security organization. Another 20 people were injured when the Buddhist area was bombed in two waves of attacks.

A week-long meditation camp was in progress at the time of the attack.

The military junta in Myanmar carries out repeated airstrikes against areas where opposition groups are engaged in armed struggle or civil disobedience against the government – often resulting in many civilian casualties.

Few independent auditors can access vulnerable areas, making monitoring difficult.
