Portugal's president has issued a law banning the covering of the face in public - a measure that is seen as targeting Muslim women who wear full-face veils.

The law, which is called the "burqa law" in local media after the full-face garment that some Muslim women wear to cover their hair and face, was passed in late July with the support of the right-wing government coalition and the far right.

- The face must be considered a central element of human identity and communication, says the country's President Antonio José Seguro.

Critics say the law undermines women's rights, because they are not allowed to decide for themselves what to wear.

Anyone who violates the law risks a fine of between 150 and 3,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 1,700 to 35,000 kronor.
