Hungarian public service channel M1 has made its first news broadcast in more than six weeks.

News programs were stopped in July as part of Prime Minister Péter Magyar's reforms to restore the independence of public service media.

The premiere broadcast, which took place on the morning of Hungary's National Day on August 20, was balanced according to the independent news website Telex. But earlier this week Telex criticized the fact that people who "previously produced propaganda" remain among the employees.

It was on July 7 that M1 suspended its broadcasts, after Magyar promised to tackle propaganda broadcasts under the rule of his predecessor Viktor Orbán.

"Public service should not lie. We are sorry that we have done it for so long," read a message in the box from M1.
