Lavrov: We will achieve our military goals in Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned Ukraine and its allies that the Russian "military operation" would achieve its stated goals "regardless of the circumstances."
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Lavrov also stated that "the threat to Russian security will be eliminated and peaceful life will return." The foreign minister reiterated Moscow's official stance that the war effort and invasion constitute a "special military operation."
Lavrov further claimed that European countries are obstructing attempts to hold peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
"Europe is doing everything it can to prevent negotiations that (President Donald) Trump's administration is interested in," Lavrov claimed, without substantiating his argument.
Sergey Lavrov also met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on the sidelines of the General Assembly's official program. Wadephul conveyed the German government's urgent call for Moscow to "abandon the dangerous path toward escalation." Germany accuses Russia of, among other things, being behind recent attempts to attack the airport in the German city of Leipzig.
This was the first time the two countries' foreign ministers had met since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
