Six found dead in collapsed building in Athens
Six people were confirmed dead on Saturday following an explosion in a residential building in central Athens.
Four of the victims were a family of tourists from the USA, and the other two were an elderly couple who lived in the building.
The explosion, which occurred on Friday morning in a two-story building in the tourist-heavy Plaka district at the foot of the Acropolis, was likely caused by a gas leak, according to Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
The American family was renting the apartment and had planned to return to the USA later on Friday, local media report.
Several surrounding buildings and cars were damaged when the house collapsed in the explosion. Two women in an adjacent building were taken to the hospital, and another person sustained minor injuries from debris.
