The northeastern US coast is being battered by a powerful autumn storm—locally known as a "nor'easter"—impacting the major cities of New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.

On Saturday, authorities warned of severe flooding, road closures, and the risk of power outages. Meanwhile, reports indicated that at least 75,000 households were without power across the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

"The rain is here. Listen closely to what I’m saying: there is much more to come," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul, after both New York City and Long Island were hit.

"Nor'easter" is the American term for an extratropical low-pressure cyclone that forms in the western North Atlantic and sweeps in from the northeast across the American continent—hence the name.
