State of emergency declared in New York after severe flooding
A state of emergency has been declared in New York after a "life-threatening" rainstorm caused severe flooding in the city, reports CNN.
In parts of Brooklyn, a month's worth of rain fell in just a few hours. The worst rain began to ease during Friday morning (afternoon, Swedish time) but further rain is expected later in the day and may worsen the situation.
- This is a dangerous weather situation and it is not over. I don't want the break to be interpreted as being over, because it's not, says Mayor Eric Adams at a press conference.
He warns that it could be about 200 millimeters before the end of the day.
A number of subway lines and roads have been flooded and closed during the storm. 8.5 million people are covered by the state of emergency.

39 degrees in the lake in the Amazon - river dolphins die en masse
More than a hundred endangered river dolphins and thousands of fish have been found dead in Lake Tefé next to the Amazon River in Brazil, writes The Guardian.
This after a temperature of 39 degrees was measured in the lake, where the prolonged drought has caused most of the water to evaporate.
- The last month in Tefé has felt like a climate scenario taken from science fiction, says Daniel Tregidgo, a researcher living in the area. Like several other countries, Brazil has recently experienced extreme weather due to the El Niño phenomenon.
In the south, heavy showers have caused flooding, while the northern parts have been hit by severe drought.
