WSJ: How Russia Learned From Early Mistakes - 'Set All Possible Traps'
Much indicates that Russia learned from its mistakes at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, writes the Wall Street Journal. In addition, it has become better at adapting to Kyiv's new modern weapons arsenal from the West.
At the beginning of the invasion, Moscow expected little or no resistance from Kyiv, resulting in many Russians killed. Now, among other things, the Russians have gotten better at avoiding their own fighter jets being shot down and installed control systems on older robots. Minefields and the use of drones characterize the war.
In addition, the Russian army has moved ammunition depots and command centers further from the front as Ukraine has gained access to more and more types of long-range weapons. Deeper and better trenches better protect the Russian ground troops.
- The difference compared to at the beginning of the invasion is colossal. They have sprayed the fields with mines and set up all sorts of traps, says Oleksandr Solonko, a private in a Ukrainian reconnaissance battalion near Robotyne in the eastern part of the country.
- They have done well.

Sergey Lavrov: The US is at direct war with Russia
The US, Great Britain and several other Western countries are in "direct war" with Russia, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to CNN. In a statement at the UN meeting in New York on Friday, he turned against the arms support that many countries have contributed to Ukraine.
- We can call this a hybrid war, but that does not change the reality. They are deeply engaged in hostilities against us, he says.
Lavrov also dismisses Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's framework for a peace settlement. The reason is that it neither touches on the issue of Ukrainian land relinquishment nor Kyiv backing away from its efforts to join NATO. Both issues are important for Moscow.
